Update 4 - 2 October 2017


Events
1) Held first-ever AF Birthday celebration at the Hoover Institution. With the other AF NSAF, we talked about AF operations of the past, present and the future. We watched a short video clip and had birthday cake.

2) Meeting with Toomas Hendrick Ilves (former Estonian President)
--President Ilves was the newly elected President of Estonia when they were hacked. He walked us through the response, how his nation changed and recommendations for the U.S. going forward.

3) Meeting with Alice Hill (Hoover DC office and former NSC Climatologist)
--Discussed at length the role of climate change and national security. Verifiable facts are that the sea level is rising and the overall temperature of the earth is rising.

4) Lecture series with ADM Jim Stravridis
--One-on-one discussion before about the role of the sea in national strategy. Lecture focused on using the sea and understanding the role of the sea

5) Meeting with RADM Gautier (USCG Director of Governmental and Public Affairs)
--Discussed the role of the USCG in national policy. Interesting note is that the USCG is developing OCO capabilities under an O6-level commander.

6) Attended two day conference on Governance in a Time of Technological Change led by Honorable George P. Schultz (60th SecState). Tremendous two days that included for cabinet secretaries and even the former CEO of Google. Included were 9 thought provoking papers that will be made into a book by Hoover Press. 7) Attended the Dark Side of the Digital Age discussion with President Ilves and Dr. Herb Lin. Both Fellows discussed the negative side of actions occurring in the cyber domain

8) Roundtable discussion with GEN Scaparrotti (SACEUR/CDRUSEUCOM)
--Discussed issues in his AOR, what he focuses on and other issues of national security

9) Started auditing three courses at Stanford:  The Future of Information; The Sacred Dead (medievil religious) and 3-D Printing of Aerospace Systems

-Attending meeting on North Korea's Trajectory: A Dangerous Path to Self-Destruction lead by Kim Sook (former South Korean Ambassador to UN)

- Meeting former Ambassador Eikenberry, currently a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution

- Meeting to discuss Cyber National Policy with Mr. Grotto (former Cyber at NSC) and Stanford Cyber Initiative Leaders at Hoover and CISAC.

- Meeting to discuss Countering Information Warfare: Emerging Challenges for National Security with Jackie Kerr

Bush's campaign, then as NSA and finally as Secretary of State. Dereliction of Duty, H.R. McMaster. This is the work LTG McMaster worked on during his time at the Hoover Institution. He provides direct insight into how military and political leaders made decisions that led us into and out of the Vietnam War. A quick read and well worth the time. The Hacked World OrderHow Nations Fight, Trade, Maneuver and Manipulate in the Digital Age, Adam Segal. Cyber Security and Cyber War: What Everyone Needs to Know, Dr. P.W. Singer and Allan Friedman. This book should be a mandatory read for senior leaders and others progressing up our military ranks. As per Dr. Singer, this book has a way to explaining technical issues and an understandable manner. Cyber is not just about enabling the other domains, it requires real defense and a sustained effort to protect what we hold dear. 

Writings from this period:

Suicide + Resiliency + Family. Three weeks ago a close friend and active duty officer took his life. As my family and I help his family through this time, I wrote about the questions we did not think about, how I failed as Sq/CC and areas where the AF could improve its resiliency training.

Organizational Development Worldwide (Doctoral requirement). This paper addresses how from 2013-2015, the 85 EIS used organizational development and team learning to become the Best Cyber Support Squadron in AFSPC in back-to-back years.

Proposed Research:

OpEd: How ignoring the requirements of NDAA 2001 continues to hurt the military.

Air Force: Four historical strategists take on cyber. Plan is to assess how Thucydides, Jomini, Kane and Boyd would approach cyber strategy.

Doctoral: The role of private foundations in high school. Plan is assess the positive benefits of private foundations and what happens in school districts that do not have private foundations.
