Events
1) Meeting with Mr. Jim Baker (Office of Net Assessment)
--We discussed issues that our fellows thought were national security concerns.
2) Discussion with Secretary Dr. Condoleezza Rice
--We discussed our program and issues of international significance.
3) Attended a discussion on the Strategic Utility of Offensive Cyber Weapons with Dr. Max Smeets and Mr. Andy Grotto
--Heavy emphasis on the value of OCO
--Follow-on meetings with Dr. Smeets and Mr. Grotto in the future to discuss co-authorship
4) Discussion with MARFORPAC CG, Lt.Gen. Berger
--Discussed his concerns in the Pacific and paralleled to the fellow's research
5) Tour of DIUx to include mission briefing
--Genuine concern on their metrics of mission accomplishment and measures of success. Constant referring to the DoD entities as DIUx's "customers."
6) Discussion with 60th SecState George P. Schultz and ADM (ret) Jim Ellis (former CDR USSTRATCOM)
--Discussed our research projects and areas to focus. Both showed interest in cyber concerns
7) Discussion on Machine Learning and National Security (Dr. Matthew Daniels (ONA))
--Briefed us about his work during a five day brainstorming session at West Point. USAF provided an F-22 officer for the work.
--Big concerns on the pros and cons. We need to understand and embrace, not ignore.
Upcoming
- Individual meeting with Mr. Andy Grotto (NSC-Cyber lead for President Obama and President Trump)
--Individual meeting with AMB Karl Eikenberry, retired LTG. Former US AMB to AFG. He asked me to help him teach his class next year entitled Technology in National Security.
- Guest lecture (30 Nov) in the freshman seminar on 3D Printing of Aerospace Systems. The class is about the benefits of 3D printing in austere environments. Format will be 15 minutes lecture on terrestrial environments. Dr.Senesky will lecture for 15 minutes on space environment. Students will then have 5 environments: Space, arid environment, underwater, city, arctic and will provide pros and cons to the rest of the class.
- Planning planning conference between USSOCOM/USCYBERCOM planners. Goal is to leverage strengths from both commands. Dr. Herb Lin, Stanford CISAC, is trying to set this up for the spring.

OpEd (Politico): MAD Lesson for Cyber. Taking parallels for the governments efforts during the Cold War to today/s cyberspace environment.
Strategic Management of the Air Force Cyberspace Career Field (Doctoral Requirement). Assessment of efforts to change the communications and information career field into the cyberspace operations career field.
Proposed Research:
Air Force: Four historical strategists take on cyber. Plan is to assess how Thucydides, Jomini, A.J. Mahan, Herman Kahn would approach cyber strategy. Thucydides (Nov), Jomini (Dec), Mahan (Jan), Kahn (Feb). Each will also have a smaller OpEd possible for The Hill.
Doctoral: The role of private foundations in high school. Plan is assess the positive benefits of private foundations and what happens in school districts that do not have private foundations. First dissertation meeting with assigned chair occurred this week.
